Tumblr, I am so, so sorry.

But cleaning my room after moving back home, I just found a bin of old recital costumes from my middle school/high school lessons, INCLUDING the Teen Jazz monstrosities I thought I got rid of.

THAT BOTTOM ONE IS A VELOUR PANTS JUMPSUIT. I MEAN COME ON. I HAD TO DANCE TO RIHANNA IN THAT.

Also okay that silver top one? I WAS THIRTEEN YEARS OLD DANCING TO THE SIX FLAGS THEME SONG WHY DOES IT STILL FIT.

I hate my life, but obviously you all get to benefit from this.

“The Empty Crib” is probably my favorite set out of the eight I shot for The Last Four Years. There was a lot of love in this one, especially costume-wise - I made most of them by hand, down to the belts and hairpieces (there’s detail shots of the hairpieces here, and I’ll be sharing some of the costumes once I get to photographing them individually this weekend).

It’s a loose interpretation of Peter Pan, Wendy, and some lost kids, and is a dedication to my obsession with both fairytales and nature, which have probably had the most impact on my work than anything else to date. I looped Nightwish’s disgustingly catchy “Storytime” while editing, and the title of the shoot comes from the chorus.

Bryan and Halli were my lovely Peter Pan and Wendy, and Maggie and Dan were my lost kids.

Continuing with The Last Four Years sets -

The fourth series of images I shot, “Tempus Frangit,” is a tribute to Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. I started reading these graphic novels towards the end of my sophomore year of college and they are collectively, hands down, my favorite literary work. I envisioned my two favorite characters, sisters Death and Delirium, out on the town together for the day.

Aside from being amazing stories in their own right, The Sandman novels have been a special tradition for me - most breaks, I’d take the train back and forth from Rochester to Boston, and I would buy one for each trip home. I’m a fast reader, so each one would only take up a smallish portion of my eleven-hour trip, but I’d spend the rest of it flipping back through the artwork and thinking about what I’d just read. I always looked forward to my Endless train rides.

Blayke is Death, and Adrian is Delirium. This was shot in downtown Rochester, New York.

With The Last Four Years site launching Tuesday, I’m going to be sharing some of the final shots from each set and a bit of the influences behind them over the next couple of days.

I planned this project such that each of the eight sets is based around a specific time period of my four years of college, arranged both chronologically and color-wise - the sets move from black and white, to low saturation, to light, to green, to orange, to yellow. I try not to let my work be inspired by too few sources, but there’s a specific song for each set that I looped while editing and took the working title from, and a few different artists that I can certainly point to.

“Violent Daylight,” “At the End of World,” and “Thawing Heart” are a bit more personal in nature than the others, but the songs behind their imagery are “No Light, No Light,” “The Islander,” and “While Your Lips Are Still Red,” respectively. Other influences include “Seven Devils,” “The Somber Lay,” “Dessumiis Luge,” “Falling Snow,” Jurgen Heckel, Birthe Piontek, and Let the Right One In.

I’ve been absent a few days getting lots of things sorted for final projects and graduation this Saturday and moving back home this Sunday. It’s been marginally cray.

Starting tomorrow I’ll be sharing some more in-depth looks at each of my shoots for The Last Four Years, but for now here’s a quick render of my end titles for Shawn’s film! The export is a bit butt right now because Vimeo doesn’t seem to appreciate 12 fps much. I’ll update if I manage to improve quality.

The characters are all taken from his film, and were drawn frame-by-frame in Illustrator according to green screen reference footage of the actors. Original music composed by Josh Forget.
